A Whisper in the Hall
Episode — Standalone | Genre: Detective Fiction | Date: 2026-05-25
Penelope was not accustomed to being wrong about her own house. She had memorized every creaking floorboard, every drafty window, every loose latch in Blackwood Manor within her first week. So when Tyler came to her office at half past nine with a worried expression and a wild story, her first instinct was skepticism.
"There is a whispering wall," Tyler said breathlessly. "In the long gallery. By the portrait of the lady with the dog."
"The long gallery has excellent acoustics. That is not the same thing as a whispering wall."
"Listen!" Tyler grabbed her hand with surprising strength for a boy of his size. "Please, Miss Penelope. I know what I heard."
Penelope allowed herself to be pulled from her chair and down the corridor. Her schedule was immaculate -- every minute accounted for -- but there was something in Tyler's bright green eyes that stopped her from refusing.
The long gallery was empty, as it always was at this hour. Dust cloths covered the furniture. The portrait of the lady with the dog -- Penelope believed it was a Victorian-era relative of the previous owner -- regarded them with a faint, knowing smile.
Tyler pressed his ear to the wall between two windows. "Wait."
Penelope waited. Thirty seconds. A minute. She was about to suggest they return to the office when she heard it -- a faint, rhythmic tapping. Not natural settling. Deliberate. Morse-like.
"That," Tyler whispered, "is what I heard."
Penelope knelt and pressed her own ear to the wainscoting. The tapping continued. Someone -- or something -- was inside the wall.
"Tyler," she said quietly, "fetch Victor. Do not run. Do not make noise. Walk calmly and tell him we have an acoustic anomaly in the long gallery."
"Yes, Miss Penelope." He was already moving, his small footsteps deliberately soft on the hardwood.
Penelope stayed at the wall, her ear pressed to the wood, counting the taps.
One. Two. Three. Pause. One. Two. Pause. Three. One. Four.
Coordinates. Someone was signaling from inside the wall cavity.
The portrait's smile seemed to widen in the dim light.
