The Cipher at Midnight
Episode 4 of 5 | Genre: Detective Fiction | Date: 2026-05-24
The study clock struck twelve. Lucas held the paper up to the desk lamp, turning it slowly.
"Are you certain this is from the bell system, Sir?"
Sebastian Bach sat across from him, fingers steepled. He had been quiet for the past ten minutes, watching his young apprentice examine the page with growing intensity.
"Victor found it taped to the underside of the bell pull in the east wing drawing room. The same one Sophie discovered last week." He paused. "It was not there when she checked it the first time."
"So the intruder came back."
"Or someone on their behalf."
Lucas set the paper flat. The cipher was handwritten in narrow columns -- strings of letters and numbers, some underlined, some crossed out with precise strokes. It was the handwriting of someone methodical, someone who did not want to be interrupted.
"This looks like a polyalphabetic substitution," Lucas said slowly. "But the number sequences suggest a book cipher layered on top. Two encryption methods for the same message. That is..."
"Paranoid," Sebastian finished. "Or professional."
Lucas looked up. "Morrison and Cade?"
"Too early to draw conclusions. But the timing is suggestive. Someone entered this house between Sophie's discovery and today. They had enough time to tape a cipher to the same bell pull and slip out undetected." Sebastian's pale eyes were steady. "That is either a message for us, or a message for someone else who was supposed to retrieve it."
"Who else would know about the bell pull?"
"Whoever planted the original transmitter."
Lucas's jaw tightened. He returned his gaze to the cipher. The numbers ranged from 1 to 312 -- page numbers, likely. The letters could be chapter initials or keyword markers.
"I need a reference library," he said. "Something published before the intruder's timeline. If this is a book cipher, the key is a specific edition."
"My study has several thousand volumes. Start with the shelf marked 'History -- European' on the third floor landing."
Lucas stood, tucking the paper carefully into his breast pocket. "I will report back before dawn."
Sebastian inclined his head. "Good. And Lucas -- keep this between us for now. If someone inside the house is involved, I do not want the message's existence widely known."
Lucas paused at the door. "Do you suspect someone on the staff, Sir?"
"I suspect everyone." Sebastian's voice was calm, measured. "That is how you catch an intruder who moves through walls."
The door closed softly. Sebastian turned back to the window, where the moon hung low over the estate gardens. Somewhere in the dark, answers were waiting. And somewhere on the third floor, a young man with a cipher in his pocket was about to find them.
