The Clockwork Alibi
Episode 5 of 5 | Genre: Detective Fiction | Date: 2026-05-24
Julian set the chronometer on Sebastian's desk with deliberate care. The pocket watch was antique -- silver case, enamel face, a delicate hairline crack across the crystal. It had been found in the east wing corridor at 3:47 AM on May 19, five minutes after the intruder's secondary signal went silent.
"I have traced every serial number, every repair record, every resale listing," Julian said. "This watch belonged to Arthur Cade. Not Morrison and Cade the company -- Arthur Cade the man. The founder's grandson."
Sebastian did not touch the watch. He studied it from across the desk. "How can you be certain?"
"The repair record. Cade sent it to a horologist in Berne, Switzerland, every eighteen months for three decades. The same jeweler. The same maintenance schedule. When the jeweler retired, the trail went cold. But the watch's movement has a distinctive signature -- the Berne jeweler replaced the mainspring with a non-standard alloy that leaves microscopic wear patterns on the gears. I matched it against photographs from the jeweler's archive."
"You have photographs of watch gears."
"I have photographs of everything, Sir. It is my job."
Sebastian picked up the watch. It was warm from Julian's pocket. The hairline crack caught the lamplight like a frozen river.
"Arthur Cade died in 2019," Sebastian said. "If this watch belonged to him, how did it end up in my hallway last week?"
"Someone retrieved it from his estate. Or it was never lost in the first place. There is a third possibility." Julian took a breath. "Arthur Cade had a son. The son was declared estranged in 2001. No public records after 2003. I could not find a death certificate, an obituary, or a gravestone."
"You think the son is alive. And he was in my house."
"I think," Julian said carefully, "that someone with a direct blood connection to the Cade family walked through your east wing corridor in the middle of the night, carrying a watch that can be traced to the founder's grandson. They either wanted us to find it, or they dropped it by accident."
Sebastian turned the watch over. The case back bore an inscription, worn nearly smooth: *Tempus fugit, memoria manet.*
"Time flies," he murmured. "Memory remains."
"It could be a taunt. Or a clue."
"It could be both." Sebastian set the watch down. "Julian, I want you to expand the search. Find me the son. Find me where he has been for the past twenty-five years, what he looks like now, and whether he has any connection to the staff who have access to the east wing."
Julian nodded. "And the watch?"
"Leave it with me. I will have Victor examine it for any data storage we might have missed. If Arthur Cade's son is our intruder, he has made his first mistake."
"He dropped his grandfather's watch."
"Worse." Sebastian's smile was thin. "He confirmed that Morrison and Cade is a family operation. That means he cares about legacy. And people who care about legacy leave trails."
Julian gathered his notes. At the door, he paused. "Sir. One more thing. The Berne jeweler's records included a 2018 receipt. The watch was serviced one year before Arthur Cade's death. The repair order was signed by the jeweler, but the pickup signature was not Arthur Cade's."
"Whose was it?"
"A C. Morrison."
The room went still. Sebastian's eyes met Julian's across the lamplit desk.
Two families. One watch. And a connection that changed everything.
