The Apprentice’s Trial

Rain drums against the windowpanes of the Great Hall. Outside, the morning has turned dark as dusk, sheets of water cascading down the tall arched windows that line the east wall. Inside, a fire crackles and pops in the massive stone hearth, casting warm amber light across the polished oak floor. The grandfather clock by the staircase ticks with steady authority, marking the hour.

Master stands before the fire, hands loosely clasped behind his back, his silver hair catching the glow of the flames. He had been making his household rounds when the rain intensified, driving him to pause here — though it suits his purpose well enough.

The heavy door to the Great Hall opens. Sophie enters first, her light brown braids slightly damp at the tips from her walk across from the Library. She clutches her small journal to her chest, eyes wide with curiosity. Behind her comes Ethan, shrugging off a wet jacket. His soft brown hair is tousled and damp — the Kitchen Garden had become untenable when the heavens opened, and he'd been flagged by a junior page to attend Master's summons.

"You called for us, Master?" Sophie asks, her voice carrying the careful politeness she has learned in her months at the household.

Master turns, his expression unreadable but not severe. "I did. Both of you, come closer."

They step forward, standing before the hearth. The firelight plays across their faces — Sophie's youthful wonder, Ethan's calm attentiveness.

"You have both proven yourselves in recent weeks," Master begins. "Sophie, your observations during the security breach revealed what seasoned staff missed. Ethan, your forensic analysis of physical evidence turned a violation into actionable intelligence. But observation and analysis are only half the equation."

He reaches into his coat and produces a small object — an old brass key, tarnished with age. Sophie's breath catches. She recognizes it from the conservatory.

Master holds it up between two fingers. "This key opens something in this household. I want you to work together — Sophie's eye for detail, Ethan's methodical reasoning — to discover what it unlocks. You have until the clock strikes twelve."

He places the key into Sophie's waiting palm. It is warm from his coat. Heavy with history.

"The trial begins now."

Sophie looks at Ethan, who gives her a small nod. She opens her journal to a fresh page and begins.
